Jacques Sesiano, An Ancient Greek Treatise on Magic Squares
نویسندگان
چکیده
The two earliest Arabic treatises explaining the construction of magic squares date from 10th century ad. One is found in Commentary on Arithmetical [Introduction] (Kitāb tafsīr al-Arithmāṭīqī) by ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad al-Anṭākī (d. 376 H/ad 987). Only book 3 original three books extant, and that a single manuscript. This divided into chapters: first collection arithmetical definitions, statements propositions, identities assembled Greek sources; second squares; third deals with “hidden numbers”, which person thinks number another discovers it after operations are performed it. Curiously, none these chapters have anything to do Nicomachus’ Introduction, supposed be commentary. Reviewed by: Jeffrey A. In this note, we give a lower bound for the distance between the maximal and minimal element in a multiplicative magic square of dimension r whose entries are distinct positive integers.
متن کاملPorting an Ancient Greek and Latin Treebank
We have recently converted a dependency treebank, consisting of ancient Greek and Latin texts, from one annotation scheme to another that was independently designed. This paper makes two observations about this conversion process. First, we show that, despite significant surface differences between the two treebanks, a number of straightforward transformation rules yield a substantial level of ...
متن کاملOn Greek, Ancient and Modern (but Rather Ancient than Modern)
In this paper a few applications of the current implementation of R are given. These applications concern typesetting problems that cannot be solved by TEX (consequently, by no other typesetting system known to the authors). They cover a wide range, going from calligraphic script fonts (Adobe Poetica), to plain Dutch/Portuguese/Turkish typesetting, to vowelized Arabic, fully diacriticized schol...
متن کاملTwo Remarks on Ancient Greek Geometry
Modern physical theories tell us that space is not euclidean. Yet, to most people, euclidean geometry seems most natural. Furthermore, most mathematical theories of non-euclidean geometry refer back to euclidean geometry in one way or another. For example, in differential geometry, the differential areas are almost always approximately Euclidean. Why is this? I want to suggest here a reason roo...
